Introduction

We’ve been looking forward to this moment for years. After all, when OLED TVs first came out several years ago, they were the big talk of tech circles. But then they didn’t take off — at least not how people expected. Instead of being the next best thing, these displays just seemed like a gimmick that didn’t work too well and cost too much money for what you got back in terms of picture quality.

Then Samsung came with its own version of an OLED TV but called it “microLED” instead of OLED (because no one knew what a microLED screen was at that point). The truth is that Samsung’s new technology isn’t very different from others — it still needs backlight and electrodes to operate as an actual light source — but this time around, it’s aimed directly at consumers who want some extra-high-end features without breaking the bank. That’s why so many high-profile companies are jumping on board with micro-led TVs right now: they’re not just good enough for your living room if you have deep pockets; they’re also cheaper than ever thanks to those same deep pockets…
