Introduction
In 1940, brothers Dick and Mac McDonald moved to Southern California from New Hampshire to seek opportunities they couldn’t find in the Great Depression-era Northeast. In 1948, the brothers closed for several months to renovate their restaurant with a “Speedee Service System” centered on supermarket-style design and organization, making them stand out from other diners. The brothers also created their famous Golden Arches logo. In 1954, Ray Kroc bought out the McDonald brothers for $2.7 million after trying unsuccessfully for years to convince them to sell out so he could open his own successful chain of restaurants based on their model (which he called Grilled Cheese Castle).
How it all started
In 1940, brothers Dick and Mac McDonald moved to Southern California from New Hampshire to seek opportunities they couldn’t find in the Great Depression-era Northeast.
The brothers opened their first burger stand in San Bernardino, California — and it was a hit! With a simple menu of hamburgers and fries, the restaurant served food at affordable prices that were perfect for hungry travelers passing through town on their way to other cities around the country. This was also pre-World War II when people were looking for inexpensive but filling meals on road trips or vacations.
In 1948, the brothers closed for several months to renovate the restaurant with a “Speedee Service System” centered on supermarket-style design and organization, making them stand out from other diners.
McDonald’s is a fast-food restaurant chain based in Oak Brook, Illinois. The company was founded by brothers Richard and Maurice “Mac” McDonald in 1940, who opened their first restaurant with help from some friends and family members.
The first McDonald’s restaurant, called the Airdrome, served milkshakes, hamburgers and French fries using long-handled spoons. This concept was an instant hit among customers because it allowed them to eat their food quickly without waiting for service like other restaurants were offering at that time (such as sit-down meals).
In 1948, Dick and Mac decided that they had enough money saved up from selling their original business venture, so they closed down for several months while renovating their site with new equipment worth $7500 (about $1 million today). The renovations included installing automatic cash registers instead of human cashiers, which would allow customers more time between ordering their orders since there would no longer be any delays or hassle involved when paying bills after eating at one of these establishments!
The brothers also created their famous Golden Arches logo.
The McDonald brothers also created their famous Golden Arches logo. This is a result of a design competition in which the McDonald brothers were looking for a new logo and wanted to make it stand out from other fast food logos. They chose an arched shape that resembled an M because they thought it would be easy to identify what company was being represented by the brand.
Ray Kroc
In 1954, Ray Kroc, who had been selling Prince Castle Multi-Mixer milkshake machines to restaurants since the ’20s, learned about the McDonald brothers’ successful operation and visited their restaurant to see what he could learn.
Legend has it that Kroc had a dream; he wanted to open his own restaurant chain with their name on it. He approached franchising as a way of achieving this goal but was turned down by both the McDonald brothers and Ray Kroc himself (who didn’t want anyone else making money off of his ideas). Instead of taking no for an answer — or even worse: running out of money — Kroc decided to take matters into his own hands and buy out everyone involved so that no one could stop him from being successful at whatever next great thing he’d come up with next!
In 1961, Kroc bought out the McDonald brothers for $2.7 million. The deal included a 50–50 split on future profits and royalties in exchange for exclusive rights to use the name “McDonald’s.”
1975: Happy Meals
Happy Meals have been around for more than 40 years. In the early days of McDonald’s, Happy Meals were available only in the United States and Canada, where they were introduced in 1979.
The concept behind a Happy Meal is simple: it’s a meal that comes with toys! The toy can be anything from small trinkets to larger items such as video games or stuffed animals; however, most of them are usually small enough to fit into one hand (and sometimes even two).
Happy Meals are currently available in many countries around the world — including Japan — but their popularity remains high in North America and Europe due to how appealing they are for children who eat at fast food chains like McDonald’s
Conclusion
The great thing about McDonald’s is that it keeps changing and adapting. They’ve gone from a small family-owned restaurant to one of the most successful companies in the world, with thousands of locations around the globe. And they continue to thrive thanks to their loyal customers who are always looking forward to new products and services from the fast food giant!
